Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday linked the electoral setbacks of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu to their opposition to the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, was defeated in the Lok Sabha on April 17 after falling short of the required two-thirds majority. The proposed legislation sought to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, to be implemented after delimitation and an increase in the number of seats in the Lower House.
