From today, UPI payment has become 50% fast. That is, now your payment maximum will be completed in 15 seconds, you will not have to wait 30 seconds as before. National Payments Corporation of India i.e., NPCI had made changes in some rules related to UPI last month which has come into force from 16 June today.

Question 1: What changes have NPCI made in UPI transactions?

answer: Earlier, when you used to pay from UPI apps like Phonpe, Googlepe or Paytm, then it used to take 30 seconds to complete the transaction. But last month, NPCI had asked banks and payment apps to upgrade their system, so that the payment would be made in just 15 seconds. These rules came into force from today.

NPCI has changed some technical things, which are associated with API i.e. application programming interfaces. In easy language, these are the software systems that your payment transports from one bank to another.

Question 2: Why did NPCI change the UPI transaction?

answer: The UPI is now used from small shops to online shopping. But many times people used to get upset due to delay in payment or time to check the status. NPCI wants users to get better experience. Also, complaints of transaction failure should also be reduced.

Question 3: Which transactions will be faster?

answer: All types of transactions have intensified. Whether you are sending money to someone or scanning the QR code at the shop, or checking the status of transaction- everything will be faster than before. The special thing is that the transaction reversal i.e. wrong payment and the status check time has also come down from 30 seconds to 10 seconds. So now the tension of “Payment went or not” will be less.

Question 4: If the transaction is stuck, then how long will confirmation be found?

NPCI has also updated that when and payment apps can check when and how pending or stuck transactions can be checked. Previously, apps had to wait for 90 seconds to verify whether any transaction was successful. Now, they can check it only after 45 to 60 seconds of the transaction starts. This will reduce confusion in the event of transaction failure.

Question 5: Will users have to do anything?

No, all this work was to be done by NPCI, bank, and payment apps. You just have to keep your UPI app updated. If your app is old, then there may be problems in transaction.

Question 6: Will this also reduce UPI fraud?

answer: This is not a plan to reduce fraud directly, but users will get the correct information about payment quickly with fast transactions and status checks. This will help in catching the wrong transaction immediately.

Question 7: What else is going to be new in UPI?

answer: The NPCI is constantly working to improve UPI. For instance:

  • From 1 August 2025: The limit to check the balance will be 50 times per app daily, and autope transactions will be only in non-peak hours.
  • From 30 June 2025: Before making payment, you will see the correct bank name of the benefits, so that the fraud is reduced.
  • From 1 April 2025: Money will be easier to withdraw money from UPI light account, and in every app, passcode or pattern lock will be necessary.

UPI transaction increased by 4% in a month

In May 2025, 18,67 crore transactions took place through Unified Payment Interface (UPI). During this period, a total amount of Rs 25.14 lakh crore was transferred during this period. The number of transactions has increased by 4% in a month.
