Abhishek Sujit Sharma, who grew up in a slum in Mumbai, has proved just that. Despite limited resources and severe financial constraints, Abhishek cleared the highly competitive JEE Advanced examination and secured admission to IIT Delhi.
Abhishek lived with his family in Lokmanya Tilak Nagar, Mumbai, in a small rented room. His family struggled to meet their everyday needs, and the lack of basic amenities often made studying difficult. However, financial hardship never came in the way of his ambition to study at one of India’s premier engineering institutes.
Access to the internet was not always easy for Abhishek. When his mobile data ran out, he would rely on his neighbour’s Wi-Fi to continue his studies. At times, he would even sit on the rooftop of his home to get better network connectivity and attend online classes or access study material.
The surroundings were far from ideal, with noise and limited space making it difficult to concentrate. Yet, Abhishek remained focused on his preparation and continued working towards his goal.
Abhishek’s family faced significant financial difficulties. His father works as a labourer at a steel fabrication company and earns a modest income. The family of four lives in a small rented room in Mumbai, where access to several basic facilities remains limited.
Despite these circumstances, Abhishek’s parents continued to support his education and encouraged him to pursue his dream of entering an IIT.
According to Abhishek, his family was his biggest source of strength during his JEE preparation. Despite living in a one-room house, his parents tried to ensure that he had a quiet space and the necessary environment to study. Their support helped him remain focused on his preparation despite the financial and logistical challenges he faced.
Abhishek’s efforts eventually paid off when the JEE Advanced results were announced. His performance secured him a place at IIT Delhi, turning a long-held dream into reality.
His achievement has become a source of pride for his family and an inspiration for other students in his neighbourhood who aspire to pursue higher education despite financial limitations.
Becoming a scientist has been Abhishek’s dream since childhood. He sees his admission to IIT Delhi as an important step towards achieving that ambition. According to him, having a clear goal, maintaining self-confidence and working consistently can help students overcome challenges.
