A massive landslide in Nepal’s Darchula district has partially obstructed the Chaulani River, prompting authorities to alert communities living downstream over the possibility of sudden flooding.

The landslide struck Bhattar in Api Himal Rural Municipality, sending large amounts of debris into the river and disrupting its flow. The district administration office in Darchula warned that additional landslides could block the river entirely, potentially leading to a sudden breach and flash floods downstream.

Sudurpaschim Chief Minister Khagraj Bhatta has instructed local authorities and security agencies to remain on high alert and make preparations for any possible emergency. The administration has also released emergency contact numbers for flood and disaster-related assistance.

The Armed Police Force said the Chaulani River was currently flowing at a normal level. However, personnel from the Nepal Chameliya Hydropower Security Base in Balanch have been mobilised to keep watch over the situation and warn nearby communities if required.

The Chaulani, also known as the Chamelia, originates in the Api Himal region before eventually flowing into the Mahakali River, which forms part of the Nepal-India border.

The latest warning comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of severe flooding and flash floods in several areas. Rescue and recovery operations remain underway after recent floods displaced communities and resulted in deaths and widespread damage.

The partial blockage of the river has heightened concerns that additional heavy rainfall could worsen the unstable situation and lead to another flash-flood emergency.
