Four Arrested In Gang-Rape Case Of Medical Student In West Bengal’s Durgapur

Police sources said that many people, including the survivor’s male friend, were being interrogated.

The police have arrested four people in connection with the gang-rape case of a medical student in the hospital premises in West Bengal’s Durgapur, officials said on Sunday.

According to the officials, the accused have been identified as Sheikh Riaz Uddin, Sheikh Ferdous,

Sheikh Nasim Uddin and Sheikh Sofiqul. All the people who have been detained are local.

The victim is a second-year MBBS student from Odisha. According to the family members of the victim, a native of Odisha’s Jaleswar and a second-year MBBS student at the IQ City Medical College in Durgapur’s Shivapur area, the incident occurred outside the campus when she was out with one of her friends for dinner.

Police rushed to the spot after receiving the information about the incident and started an investigation. The survivor was admitted to a hospital for medical examination.

Police have also started questioning staff at the medical college, as well as other individuals, including the friend who was with the woman.

According to the college, the two students left the campus around 7:58 pm on Friday for dinner. It said that one of them returned at 8:42 pm, but after loitering around the main exit area for around 5-6 minutes, he stepped out again at about 8:48 pm.

In its statement, the college said that the two came back together at 9:29 pm, and the female student proceeded toward the Girls’ Hostel at around 9:31 pm.

Odisha CM Condemns The Incident

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the alleged gang rape of an Odia medical student in West Bengal. In a social media ‘X’ post, CM Majhi said, the unfortunate incident of gang rape involving an Odia student in Durgapur, West Bengal, is highly condemnable and painful.

“I am deeply shocked upon hearing this news. In this sensitive matter, I strongly urge the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to take exemplary action against the accused as per the law,” he said.

Odisha CM said, “I pray for the speedy recovery of the victim. I have also instructed senior officials to contact the West Bengal government and take necessary steps. All possible assistance will be provided to the victim’s family on behalf of the Odisha government.”

Majhi has been in contact with the father of the Odia medical student who was gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal. He spoke with the father over the phone and assured him that the Odisha government would provide all possible assistance to the family.
