Chidambaram on Operation Blue Star: In 1984, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had given permission for military action to control the militants inside the Golden Temple, the holiest site of the Sikhs located in Amritsar, Punjab. Due to this operation, his political position was greatly affected and ultimately he was murdered. Regarding this, Congress has been accused of hurting the religious sentiments of Sikhs.

Now veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram has said that Operation Blue Star was the wrong way to get the Golden Temple back. He said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi paid the price for this mistake with her life.

Chidambaram was speaking at the Khushwant Singh Literature Festival in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. They were discussing journalist Harinder Baweja’s book “They Will Shoot You, Madam”.

What was Operation Blue Star?

In June 1984, the Indian Army conducted an operation to evict terrorists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. This is called Operation Blue Star. After this operation, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own Sikh security personnel.

What did Chidambaram say?

Chidambaram said, ‘I am not disrespecting any army officer here, but this was the wrong way to get the Golden Temple back. After a few years, we showed the right way – by keeping the army out. Blue Star was the wrong approach and I believe that Mrs. Gandhi paid the price for this mistake with her life.

The decision was not of Indira Gandhi alone

Chidambaram also said that this decision was not of Indira Gandhi alone. He told that it was a joint decision of the army, police, intelligence department and civil service.

He said, ‘The blame for this cannot be placed only on Mrs. Gandhi. Will you do this?” he asked this question to writer Harinder Baweja.

Talking about today’s Punjab, Chidambaram said that the demand for Khalistan has almost ended. Now the real problem of Punjab is economic problem.

He said, ‘From my visits to Punjab, I feel that the demand for Khalistan or secession has practically subsided. The real problem is the economic situation…Most illegal migrants are from Punjab.
