Barcelona suffered a staggering 4-1 defeat at Sevilla on Sunday in La Liga. Former Barcelona and Arsenal player Alexis Sanchez scored for Sevilla, while Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty for the visitors, as the The rojiblancos registered their first win over the Spanish champions since October 2015.

It was the first time in 74 years that Sevilla scored four goals against Barça and won, making it their biggest win over them since a 0-4 in 1951. For the latter, it was the worst loss since a 4-1 against Celta Vigo in 2015.

Barcelona, experiencing their first loss of the season, now sit in second place, trailing bitter rivals Real Madrid by two points, following Madrid’s win over Villarreal on Saturday.  Sevilla climbed to fourth place, if temporarily.

Veteran Chilean winger Sanchez opened the scoring with an early penalty against ex-teammate Wojciech Szczęsny, and Isaac Romero doubled the lead despite missing two earlier opportunities. Marcus Rashford reduced the deficit for Barcelona before half-time, continuing his red-hot form, but Lewandowski missed a crucial penalty that could have leveled the match.

Late goals from Jose Carmona and Akor Adams sealed Sevilla’s comprehensive victory, leaving Hansi Flick’s Barcelona with an unusually heavy defeat.

The Catalan side was still reeling from their midweek Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain. They appeared sluggish against a determined, albeit weaker, Sevilla squad.

How the scoreline reached historic numbers

The game took a decisive turn when Ronald Araujo’s clumsy challenge on Romero resulted in a penalty, which Sanchez converted by sending Szczesny the wrong way.

Romero missed two significant chances, first denied by Szczesny and then missing from Lucien Agoume’s cross. However, he made no mistake on his third opportunity, scoring from Ruben Vargas’s pass.

Rashford sparked Barcelona into life, forcing a save from Sevilla’s goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, and then scoring his first La Liga goal from a Pedri Gonzalez cross.

During the interval, Flick substituted Araujo and Gerard Martin with Eric Garcia and Alejandro Balde, seeking to improve Barcelona’s performance.

In the second half, Szczesny made a crucial save to deny Djibril Sow, as Sevilla maintained their pressure. Despite their strong start, Sevilla’s nerves showed, having won just one league game at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in 2025 before this match.

Sevilla substitute Adnan Januzaj conceded a penalty for a foul on Balde, offering Barcelona a chance to equalise. However, Lewandowski missed the target after an erratic run-up.

Roony Bardghji had a chance to equalise, but his shot was saved, and Rashford was poised to score if he had received the pass.

Sevilla’s victory was secured with late goals from full-back Carmona, who scored from a low shot past Szczesny, and Adams.
