The FIFA World Cup 2026 is fast approaching, with the global showpiece heading to the USA, Mexico and Canada as North America prepares to stage the most ambitious edition of the quadrennial tournament.
However, the lead up to it has been flooded with controversies ranging from overpriced tickets to denied visas. The event wasn’t spared of allegations of racism either as multiple teams and players were subject to intense scrutiny on arrival.

Former Italian World Cup-winner Fabio Cannavaro’s Uzbekistan national team was searched with bomb-sniffing dogs, causing further uproar.
This isn’t the first incident of things going awry in the lead up to the FIFA showpiece as Switzerland raised alarms about the proximity of vipers to their camp, while an incident of gunfire was reported near the English camp. Japan expressed concerns over the conditions of their training base.
For the first time, 48 teams will compete for the coveted trophy in the finals. The competition will feature a record-breaking 104 matches, the highest number of games ever played in the history of the World Cup.
The teams have been divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two sides from each group progressing directly to the knockout stage. In addition, eight more teams will have the opportunity to advance by ranking among the best third-placed sides across all groups.
At the heart of this special edition is the official match ball, the Trionda, which pays tribute to the three host nations. Trionda means “three waves” and showcases one of the most distinctive and innovative designs in the tournament’s history.
The ball commemorates the first time three countries have united to host the World Cup, with its panels connecting to form a triangle at the centre, symbolising the historic partnership between the USA, Mexico and Canada.
It also features iconography representing each host nation: an eagle for Mexico, a maple leaf for Canada and a star for the United States, while gold detailing honours the gleaming World Cup trophy.
