Europe’s heatwave sparks an AC rush, search trends and Meta ads suggest

For generations, Europe sold itself as an escape from the heat. British tourists travelled to Spain for sunshine, Parisians opened their windows on summer evenings, and homes across much of northern Europe were built to keep warmth in rather than heat out. Air conditioners remained uncommon, often seen as a luxury rather than a household necessity.

Google Trends data shows search interest for air conditioners hitting peak levels in the UK, Germany and France as Europe’s heatwave intensified

Climate change has changed everything. As increasingly intense summers grip the continent, Europe may be quietly embracing cooling. Search interest in air conditioners reached record highs across Britain, Germany and France, while active cooling advertisements surged by as much as 50 times in some markets during June.

To understand how consumers and businesses are responding to rising temperatures, India Today’s Open Source Intelligence team analysed Google Trends search data between 2022 and 2026 and Meta Ad Library advertisements published during June 2026 across the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

The analysis found that online interest in air conditioners reached multi-year highs, while digital advertising for cooling appliances accelerated sharply during the hottest weeks of June.

As Europe baked through June, AC makers sharply increased Meta ads across key markets, with the UK and France seeing the steepest late-month spikes

The findings come as the World Meteorological Organization recently warned that a “widespread, intense late June heatwave in Europe has shattered numerous temperature records” and has had major impacts on health, infrastructure and productivity. The agency described Europe as “the world’s fastest warming continent” and said the continent has warmed by around two degrees since the historic 1976 heatwave.

Google search interest for “air conditioner” in the United Kingdom, “Klimaanlage” in Germany and “climatiseur” in France reached their highest levels in June 2026. Search interest in Britain rose from an index value of 10 in June 2022 to 100 in 2026. Germany increased from 16 to 100, while France climbed from 18 to 100 over the same period.

The rise in public interest was mirrored by a sharp increase in digital advertising.

Meta Ad Library data shows that air conditioning advertisements accelerated dramatically through June. In the United Kingdom, active advertisements increased from around 150 during the first week of June to nearly 7,700 during the final week of the month. Germany recorded an increase from about 880 advertisements to nearly 4,900, while France rose from around 150 advertisements to approximately 5,600.

Many of these advertisements promoted portable air conditioners, air coolers and energy-efficient cooling products, suggesting that advertisers and manufacturers are increasingly targeting European consumers as demand for cooling solutions grows.

The findings are particularly notable because much of Europe has historically had relatively low household air conditioning penetration compared with warmer regions of the world. For decades, many European homes relied on insulation, ventilation and architectural design to cope with summer conditions, while air conditioning remained far less common than in countries such as the United States, India or those in the Gulf region.

But now, searches are climbing, advertisements are multiplying and cooling products are increasingly targeting European consumers. Together, these digital signals suggest that Europe may be entering a new era where cooling becomes less of a luxury and increasingly a necessity.
