For the trains whose journey is between 12 am and 2 pm, the Emergency Kota application will be required to be done one day before the journey by 12 noon.
Indian Railways has changed the rules of ticket booking in Emergency Quota (EQ). Now passengers will have to apply for emergency tickets one day before the journey. Applications made on the day of travel will not be accepted from now on.
This rule has come into force from today. The Railway Board said that these changes have been made to make the process to prepare the chart easier and to prevent black marketing of tickets.
Main change in emergency quota rules
- For the trains whose journey is between 12 am and 2 pm, the Emergency Kota application will be required to be done one day before the journey by 12 noon.
- It will be mandatory to send applications before 4 pm from 2:01 pm to 11:59 pm.
- Emergency quota for Sunday or public holiday trains will have to be applied in the office time of the pre -workday. For example, it will have to apply for Sunday trains by Friday and for the day trains till the last working day.
What is Emergency quota?
Emergency Kota is a special arrangement of Railway, which provides tickets to passengers in emergency. This quota is usually reserved for government officials, senior citizens, medical emergency, or travelers with special circumstances. Railways said that after the change, real passengers will benefit and the booking process will be accelerated.
Railways have made three major changes in the last two months
1. Tickets will be confirmed 8 hours before the train leaves
The reservation chart of trains will be prepared 8 hours before the train leaves. Till now this chart was made just 4 hours ago. With this, passengers will get more time to book an alternative journey or another ticket if you do not get ticket confirmed.
It has been started from July 1, 2025. Initially it has been implemented in certain trains.
2. Aadhaar required for Tatkal Ticket
Aadhaar authentication has been made necessary on IRCTC website or app for booking Tatkal tickets from 1 July 2025. Apart from this, OTP related to Aadhaar number is also being attached to online booking from July 15. For both AC and non-AC classes for the first 30 minutes, agents are not allowed to book tickets.

3. Sleeper on waiting ticket-AC will not be able to travel in coach
Earlier, Indian Railways had implemented new rules for waiting tickets from 1 May. According to them, passengers with waiting list tickets will no longer be allowed to travel in sleeper or AC coaches.
Passengers whose tickets are in the waiting list will now be able to travel only in general coaches. If a passenger is found traveling in AC or sleeper coach on waiting ticket, he will be fined.
Fines for violation:
- Fines for AC: ₹ 440
- Fines for sleeper: ₹ 250
