Drug Addict Trespasses Into Omar Abdullah’s Jammu Residence In Broad Daylight

A 21-year-old man allegedly entered the official residence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday, raising security concerns. The man trespassed the CM’s Jammu residence in broad daylight.

The residence is located on Wazarat Road. CM Abdullah was in Delhi when the incident occurred, where he was meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah over issues including the restoration of statehood to J&K, rules governing coordination between the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor, and rationalisation of reservations, The Indian Express reported.

Officials said a preliminary inquiry found no indication of terror links or malicious intent on the part of the intruder. The man, who is allegedly a drug addict, was apprehended by the Special Security Group (SSG), which is responsible for protecting the serving chief minister and his immediate family. He was subsequently handed over to Gujjar Nagar police for questioning.

According to officials, the man, a resident of Reasi, had arrived in Jammu with a friend on August 3. He was picked up by police that evening while he was in an inebriated state. He was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

His parents reached the police post the following day after being contacted by police. As the offence was bailable and carried a maximum sentence of up to a year, he was expected to be released. However, police asked his father to arrange a local surety.

While his father went to find someone willing to stand surety, the man reportedly escaped, climbed a nearby hillock and entered the CM’s residence by scaling its rear wall.

The SSG detected his presence shortly afterwards and detained him. He reportedly told investigators that he fled because he feared his father would not return. The man was later booked for trespassing and released on bail.

The incident comes amid repeated concerns raised by National Conference leaders over the security arrangements for Omar Abdullah and his father, former chief minister Farooq Abdullah.
