The six-hour discussion reviewed stability along the 3,488-km Line of Actual Control (LAC) as well as progress under the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination (WMCC).
The bilateral engagement between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was held in a positive and constructive atmosphere, top government sources told CNN-News18.
The six-hour talks focused on border de-escalation, maintaining the sanctity of the border, bilateral relations and preparations for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s forthcoming visit to India, sources said.
The discussions reviewed stability along the 3,488-km Line of Actual Control (LAC) and progress under the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination (WMCC).
According to sources, both sides held cordial and forward-looking discussions without major friction and exchanged views on areas of mutual interest, with security-related matters forming an important part of the engagement.
India-China Talks Focus On Border Peace
De-escalation along the border was a key agenda item, with both sides reviewing steps to reduce tensions and prevent any recurrence of friction along the LAC.
The two sides underlined the importance of upholding the sanctity of the border and ensuring peace and tranquillity along the LAC as a foundation for broader progress in bilateral ties.
India and China also reaffirmed their commitment to advancing negotiations on a framework for the settlement of the boundary question in accordance with the 2005 Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for Settlement of the India-China Boundary Question and the consensus reached during subsequent Special Representatives’ talks.
The two sides agreed to pursue a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question and decided to hold the 26th round of Special Representatives’ talks in India in 2027.
Kailash-Manasarovar Yatra, Border Trade Discussed
The Indian side appreciated China’s efforts to increase the number of batches of Indian pilgrims undertaking the Kailash-Manasarovar Yatra in the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Both sides also welcomed the reopening of the three designated border trading points.
India and China agreed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in areas including border trade and pilgrimage, with the aim of creating an atmosphere of dialogue, peace, consultation and cooperation in the border areas.
The two sides also agreed to hold the next meeting of the India-China Expert-Level Mechanism on Trans-border Rivers in September.
They further agreed to maintain communication on issues including hydrological data sharing and the renewal of relevant memoranda of understanding.
Xi Jinping’s India Visit On Agenda
The talks also covered preparations for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s forthcoming visit to India.
Sources indicated that Xi is expected to travel with a large delegation, highlighting the significance attached to the engagement.
The positive engagement between Doval and Wang Yi is expected to clear the path for Xi Jinping’s visit to India, sources said.
Iran Situation Also Discussed
The evolving situation in Iran and related regional developments also figured in the discussions, according to government sources.
Overall, the engagement focused on mutual interests, security and the need for stable and predictable relations between India and China.
