Soon after Donald Trump on Monday warned that he will “substantially raise” the tariff paid by India for buying “massive amounts of Russian Oil”, Congress MP Manish Tewari had some scathing remarks of his own for the American President and said India has “resilience” enough to withstand his “tariff threat”.
In a sardonic tone, he asked Trump not to “lose sleep on it” and reminded him of the time the United States tried to interfere in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.
Comparing both the situations as an example of India’s resilience, he said the US sent the seventh fleet into the Bay of Bengal to “deter” India from “reordering the political map of South Asia”. He said New Delhi “withstood that” and will do the same if he chooses to follow up his warning of increasing tariffs.
“Don’t loose sleep on it… Your nation sent the seventh fleet into the Bay of Bengal in 1971 to deter us from reordering the political map of South Asia. We withstood that . We have enough resilience as a nation to withstand your Tariff threat. Thank you very much for your attention to this matter SIR,” (sic) Tewari said in a post on X.

Trump has alleged that much of the oil India purchased from Russia is being sold in the open market “for big profits”. His announcement, made on his social media platform Truth Social, came days after he announced a 25 percent reciprocal tariff on India and an unspecified penalty for importing oil from Russia.
“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!” Trump said in the post.
India has defended its sovereign right to conduct energy policy based on national interest.
The Centre has clarified that India’s energy purchases are guided by market dynamics and national interests.
