Donald Trump attends Knicks Spurs NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, is booed as ultra tight security, protests and restricted access disrupt New York fans and watch parties

US President Donald Trump received a mixed reception during his visit to Madison Square Garden on Monday night, where he attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
Trumpseated in an executive suite inside the iconic New York arena, was met with boos from sections of the crowd when his image appeared on the big screen during the national anthem. His presence also prompted one of the most extensive security operations seen at Madison Square Garden in recent years.
Authorities imposed strict restrictions around the venue, preventing non-ticket holders from entering the surrounding area and cancelling the outdoor watch parties that had become a feature of the Knicks‘ playoff run. Fans attending the game were instructed to arrive hours early to pass through airport-style security checks, while bags were prohibited inside the arena.
“The message is simple: celebrate the Knicks, but avoid the MSG area tonight if you do not have tickets for the game,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told a news conference.
Security around the arena included a heavy deployment of United States Secret Service agents and hundreds of New York police officers. AFP reporters observed extensive fencing around parts of the venue as crowds gathered nearby.
The disruption drew criticism from some local political figures, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
“During one of the best moments NYC has enjoyed in decades, (Trump) makes it all about himself. Trump should LEAVE US ALONE! He’s not wanted here,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X.
Despite the inconvenience, some fans welcomed the president’s appearance. Knicks supporter Anthony Pulley acknowledged the impact on the city’s playoff atmosphere but appreciated Trump’s attendance.
“I think it sucks. I think it really put a damper on all the watch parties. But it’s pretty cool he wants to show up and be a part of it,” he said.
The Knicks entered the game holding a 2-0 lead in the Finals and chasing their first NBA championship since 1973. The matchup attracted a star-studded crowd, including New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who revealed he spent nearly $1,000 on tickets.
With Trump attending, the Secret Service deployed additional resources, including counter-drone technology, as part of its protection plan.
“The Secret Service’s focus is straightforward: to ensure everyone attending the game can enjoy the game and have a safe experience, while we carry out our responsibility to protect the President of the United States,” Special Agent Matt McCool told reporters.
The heightened security came just a day after a stabbing incident at nearby Penn Station left six people injured, though police said there was no indication of a terrorism-related threat.
