Prices of veg thali decreased due to potatoes, onions and tomatoes becoming cheaper.
According to CRISIL report, the cost of veg thali has come down due to fall in the prices of potatoes, onions, tomatoes and pulses. Tomato prices have declined by 40%, onion prices by 51% and potato prices by 31% on an annual basis.
At the same time, the price of pulses has also declined by 17%. Due to these reasons the price of veg thali has decreased. Potatoes and tomatoes account for 24% of the cost of a veg thali.
The price of non-veg thali decreased due to fall in the price of chicken.
This reduction in the price of non-veg thali has come due to the 6% decline in the price of broilers i.e. chicken on an annual basis. The broiler accounts for 50% of the cost of a non-veg thali.
At the same time, the price of vegetable oil has increased by 11% and the price of LPG cylinder by 6% on an annual basis, otherwise both the plates could have become even cheaper.
This is how the average cost of a thali is calculated.
- CRISIL has calculated the average cost of preparing a thali at home based on current food prices in North, South, East and West India. Monthly changes affect the expenses of the common man.
- CRISIL data also reveals the ingredients that drive changes in the price of a thali, including cereals, pulses, broilers (chicken), vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas.
- Veg thali consists of roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad. Whereas for non-veg thali, chicken has been included instead of lentils.
Note- The figures given above represent the cost per thali prepared at home. This is not the retail price of the thali, which includes overhead costs, staff expenses and profit margin.
