Mumbai Police is deployed on the campus after the death of the student.
The investigation into the suicide of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode has been handed over to the Mumbai Crime Branch. He had committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room on Friday evening.
According to the father, Sahil’s teacher Suryanarayan Dulla abused him based on caste and threatened to implicate him in a false case. Police have registered a case against Dulla.
Sahil was a resident of Yavatmal district of Maharashtra. He was a second year BTech student in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering. Sahil died a few hours after he was caught using mobile in the examination.
Sahil’s mother also spoke to the media on Saturday.
Mid-semester exams postponed amid student protests
After the incident, more than 400 students protested against the administration. Later Director Prof. Shirish Kedare met the students.
Mid-semester examinations have been postponed amid student protests. The institute has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the student and the matter is being investigated.
Student Wellness Center present in IIT Bombay
Student Wellness Center (SWC) exists in IIT Bombay to relieve the mental stress of the students. Here students can get personal counseling and help in dealing with stress. For this, appointment can be taken by emailing wellness@iitb.ac.in or calling 022-2576-9070.
If a student is becoming irritable on every issue, is quitting studies, keeps himself locked in the room, eats and sleeps less or always talks in a depressing manner, then it is a sign of immense mental stress.
65 students committed suicide in 5 years
According to RTI data, a total of 65 students committed suicide in the country’s IITs between 2021 and 2025. There were 15 cases in 2025 alone. In these five years, IIT Kharagpur recorded the highest number of 11 cases. This RTI was filed last year by IIT Kanpur alumnus Dheeraj Singh. He runs a global mentoring network for IIT students.
