Andhra Pradesh is bracing for another severe cyclonic storm days after Cyclone Arnab battered the state’s coastline, with a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal expected to intensify into a cyclone on November 1.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast that the system could strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal on Monday and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday morning, November 3.
The storm is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Narsapur, packing wind speeds of 100 to 110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph, according to the weather department.
Here are the top updates on the developing weather system:
1. Deep Depression Likely To Become Cyclone Murasu
In its latest bulletin issued on Sunday morning, the IMD said the depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal had intensified into a deep depression. The system was centred at 5.30 am on November 1 near latitude 11.5°N and longitude 86.4°E, around 700 km east-southeast of Chennai, 770 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 770 km southeast of Machilipatnam.
It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by midnight on Sunday and further strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal on November 2.
If it develops into a cyclonic storm, it will be named Murasu, a name contributed by India that means ‘drum’ in Tamil.
2. Landfall Likely Between Nellore And Narsapur On November 3
The IMD has forecast that the severe cyclonic storm will approach the south Andhra Pradesh coast by the early hours of Tuesday and cross between Nellore and Narsapur by the morning.
The system is expected to bring sustained wind speeds of 100 to 110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph.
The forecast comes days after Cyclone Arnab made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on October 28, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to several parts of the region.
3. Heavy To Extremely Heavy Rainfall Forecast
The approaching storm is likely to trigger heavy rainfall across coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema over the next three days.
According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, several districts are likely to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday.
On Sunday, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam, Markapuram and Nellore districts.
On Monday, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is forecast in Eluru, West Godavari, NTR, Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Prakasam, Markapuram, Nellore and Tirupati districts.
On Tuesday, very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Vizianagaram, Kurnool, Nandyal, Kadapa, Annamayya, Nellore, Chittoor and Tirupati.
4. Fishermen Asked Not To Venture Into Sea
With sea conditions expected to deteriorate as the system intensifies, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until Wednesday.
The IMD has also warned of rough to very rough sea conditions over parts of the Bay of Bengal, with strong winds and heavy rainfall expected around the system.
Authorities are monitoring the storm’s movement and have urged coastal residents to remain alert and follow official weather advisories.
5. Andhra Still Recovering From Cyclone Arnab
The fresh cyclone threat comes less than a week after Cyclone Arnab struck the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts on October 28.
The storm brought strong winds and heavy rainfall, damaging houses, uprooting trees and disrupting electricity supplies in several areas.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has visited affected areas, including Narasapuram and Mogalthur in West Godavari district, to assess the damage and meet residents and farmers.
The state government has assured affected families that relief and restoration work will continue until normalcy is fully restored.
