‘Congratulations, President Xi’: Trump Jibes At Supreme Court Over Birthright Citizenship Ruling

The US Supreme Court rejected Trump’s bid to restrict birthright citizenship, dealing a setback to one of his signature immigration policies.

United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday took a jibe at the US Supreme Court for upholding birthright citizenship and sarcastically congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“I would like to congratulate President Xi, and the Great Country of China, on their massive Birthright Citizenship WIN!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump did not explain his remark in the Truth Social post. However, the comment came hours after the US Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship in the United States, while China follows a nationality system that does not provide automatic citizenship based solely on place of birth.

Supreme Court Upholds Birthright Citizenship

The Supreme Court rejected Trump’s bid to restrict birthright citizenship, dealing a setback to one of his signature immigration policies.

In a 6-3 ruling, the court maintained the constitutional right to American citizenship for nearly everyone born on US soil.

Trump had signed an executive order on the first day of his second term in the White House, directing that children born in the United States to parents who were in the country illegally or on temporary visas would no longer automatically receive US citizenship.

Lower courts had blocked the order, ruling that the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to nearly everyone born in the United States.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, said, “Children born in the United States to parents unlawfully or temporarily present are ‘subject to the jurisdiction’ of the United States and are citizens at birth under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause.”

“Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights, to freely participate in our political community. The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land.’ We keep that promise today,” Roberts wrote.

The ruling stated that changing birthright citizenship would require an amendment to the US Constitution. Roberts noted that, under the 14th Amendment, anyone born in the country, with very limited exceptions, is a US citizen.

‘Too Bad’: Trump Reacts To Supreme Court’s Citizenship Ruling

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticised the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship, calling it “too bad” for the United States, while saying he would seek legislation through Congress to change the policy.

“The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is too bad for our Country, but we can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation, with the support of the President, that has now been determined during this process. No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship. They will have my Complete and Total Support!”, Trump wrote in a post on X.

The US Justice Department also said it remained committed to addressing illegal birth tourism.

“Actors seeking to exploit loopholes to obtain automatic citizenship for their children pose a national security threat and will be brought to justice,” the department said in a post on X.
