What a day and what a pattern for Italy’s brightest sporting stars.

Jannik Sinner and Kimi Antonelli both claimed massive wins yesterday in their respective sports, continuing one of the most bizarre and brilliant coincidences in modern sport.

Twinning Triumphs

Let’s break it down, because this is where it gets uncanny.

  • March 15: Sinner wins Indian Wells ->Antonelli wins the Chinese Grand Prix
  • March 29: Sinner takes Miami -> Antonelli triumphs in Japan
  • May 3: Sinner lifts Madrid -> Antonelli storms to victory in Miami

Sinner’s latest win at the Madrid Open marked his record fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title — a feat that has been achieved by none except the current World No.1.

Meanwhile, Antonelli’s victory at the Miami Grand Prix sealed his third straight race win — the first in F1 history to convert his first three poles into three consecutive wins.

Toto Wolff Sees The Connection

The parallels haven’t gone unnoticed, especially within the F1 paddock.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was quick to highlight just how special Antonelli’s run has been… and how it mirrors Sinner’s rise.

“I don’t think that any of us would have expected this kind of run. We’ve given him a car that is very good, and an engine that is right but how he’s been able to monetise on that every single weekend is special.”

Wolff then drew the comparison directly.

“The easier bit is making sure that he keeps both feet on the ground here in the team. His parents have played a big part in that, to leave him grounded. The bigger problem is the Italian public.

“Now that they are not qualified for football, it’s all about Sinner and Antonelli, and Antonelli and Sinner. Sinner won in Madrid, so it’s the two that are superstars.”

Coincidence? Well, it’s starting to feel more like destiny.
