US President Donald Trump, in a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, told CNN-News18 on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France on Wednesday, that highly skilled Indian professionals will get more employment opportunities in the United States, with both he and PM Modi affirming the depth of their bilateral relationship.
Responding to a question posed by CNN-News18’s Siddhanth Mishra on the sidelines of the summit, Trump said: “Highly skilled Indians will get more opportunities.” He also described India as a country with “very talented people” and said the two nations “cannot be closer.”
The remarks arrive days after the US Supreme Court struck down a proposal that would have imposed a $100,000 federal fee on companies hiring H-1B visa holders. The proposal had drawn sharp criticism from Indian professionals and major American technology firms since its introduction earlier this year.
Its dismissal by the court removed what the industry had consistently flagged as a structural deterrent to hiring foreign talent.
Trump did not announce specific policy changes at the G7 presser, but his tone on Indian workers was unambiguous. Indian nationals account for the overwhelming majority of H-1B visa approvals each year, which means any movement in US skilled immigration rhetoric carries immediate weight back home for technology professionals, engineers, researchers, and healthcare workers with American career aspirations.
Trump also described PM Modi as one of the toughest negotiators he has encountered. On the trade front, he told reporters that the two sides were “very close” to a deal, indicating that economic cooperation remains a live and active thread in the bilateral agenda.
No formal immigration policy announcement has emerged from Evian, yet. But for the large pool of Indian professionals tracking US visa developments after months of regulatory uncertainty, Trump’s comments Wednesday offered the clearest positive signal from the White House in some time.
