N. Chandrasekaran, resigns as chairman of Tata Sons
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, aka N Chandrasekaran, has resigned from the post of Tata Sons chairman, ending his nearly decade-long term with one of India’s top conglomerates spanning airlines, semiconductors, electronics, batteries and digital businesses.
Chandrasekaran, who was named the chairman of Tata Sons in 2017, will remain in the role until his term officially ends in February 2027. Meanwhile, he has informed the Tata board of his decision.
Chandrasekaran, a computer engineer who began his career at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), also serves as chairman of several Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors and Tata Consumer Products. Given his pivotal role in the company’s businesses across sectors, his exit is expected to have implications across the Tata Group.
His decision unfolds days before Tata Sons’ annual general meeting on August 18, when shareholders are scheduled to vote on Chandrasekaran’s reappointment as a director. The question of Chandrasekaran’s continuation as the chairperson had already been a major conflict zone within the group.
In February, Tata Sons deferred a decision on extending his tenure after Noel Tata, the chairman of Tata Trusts and the half-brother of late Ratan Tata, opposed his reappointment, according to Reuters.

In his resignation letter, N Chandrasekaran reflected on his nearly four-decade-long association with the Tata Group, expressing deep gratitude for the opportunities that shaped his professional life.
“I have completed 40 years of professional life at the Tata Group. I am grateful for the immensely satisfying opportunity to contribute to this venerable institution. Leading Tata Sons over the past decade has been a great honour and a profound responsibility.”
He underlined that he had decided to resign from the company after a Board member refrained from backing a resolution seeking an extension of his tenure.
“My current tenure as the Chairman of Tata Sons comes to an end on Feb 20, 2027. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended the extension of my next term for a period of five years, which was recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board. Subsequently, the resolution was tabled in the Tata Sons Board on Feb 24, 2026. However, the proposal was not carried through because one of the Board Members did not support it, and in the absence of unanimous support, I chose to defer the decision.”
Chandrasekaran said that no resolution on the matter was made till date, asserting that “clarity on leadership” is important for employees, investors, and partners as well as stakeholders.
“It has been 6 months since that Board meeting, and no resolution has been reached till date. Tata Sons is a very large institution and there are many strategic projects that are under critical stages of execution. It is not only necessary to have a leader in place to lead the Group beyond Feb 2027, but also clarity on leadership is important for employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders”, he said.
“Under these circumstances, earlier today, I have communicated to the Tata Sons Board, that I have decided not to offer myself for reappointment when my term ends on Feb 20, 2027. I have asked the Board to decide on the succession soon to ensure a proper transition. I am grateful for the support of all stakeholders”, Chandrasekaran wrote.
