Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant said that the use of AI in the judiciary is necessary, but there is no need to be afraid of it. He said that technology can only be helpful and cannot replace the judge. He said this at a program in Bengaluru on Saturday. He said that balance is important when using AI. This can make the work faster and easier, but decisions should always be taken based on human thinking, experience and constitutional understanding. He asked the judicial officers not to be influenced by AI and maintain their independent thinking. He made this statement at the conference of Karnataka State Judicial Officers Association on the topic ‘Reimagining the Judiciary in the Era of Artificial Intelligence’. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other judges of the Supreme Court were also present on this occasion. CJI said – Over-dependence on AI will weaken the justice process. CJI said that just as judges spend more time, thinking and patience in complex cases, similarly AI tools should also be used wisely. He said that these tools will help if used properly, but the independent decision of the judge will remain most important. He also warned about its risks. He said that AI works only on data and algorithms, it does not have human understanding, morality and understanding of social context. In such a situation, excessive dependence can weaken the justice process. The CJI said that in recent times, examples of wrong decisions, fake legal references and wrong information have come to light from AI platforms. He said that these are not small mistakes, but can affect the foundation of the justice system. CJI said- Misuse of AI wastes the time of the court. He also said that by misusing AI, misleading petitions and weak claims can be prepared. This wastes the court’s time and affects the real cases. The CJI stressed that any content created with AI needs to be scrutinized. Its responsibility cannot be left to the machine. Judicial officers will have to examine every information themselves. He said that justice is a human process, which is formed from experience, thinking and values. No technology can replace it completely. In the end he said that the judiciary is in a phase of change. At such a time, it is important that the system assesses itself and maintains its original identity even while adopting technology. CJI has already given statement on AI. Even before this, Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant had expressed his views regarding AI. In the National Conference-2026 of the Supreme Court Bar Association held in Bengaluru, he had said that AI should be included in the judicial system in such a way that it strengthens the system, and not weakens its core functions.
