Chaotic celebrations at Bengaluru for RCB’s IPL triumph led to a stampede, causing at least four deaths. The incident adds to a history of tragic stampedes at sporting events.

Chaotic celebrations turned into a full-blown tragedy when fans tried to join a party inside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to honour RCB’s IPL triumph.
At least four people (as far as known now) lost their lives in a stampede-like situation near the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The death toll is expected to rise as many of the seriously injured are being treated at the nearby Vydehi hospital and Bowering hospital.
Who’s to blame for the outcome remains a question to be answered by all. But, unfortunately, this isn’t the first time such a situation has arisen in a sporting event.
Here we take a look at ten stampedes that occurred at various sporting events across history, which unfortunately also resulted in pandemonium and loss:
1. Disaster National Stadium – Lima, Peru (1964) Date: May 24, 1964
Fatalities: 328
A controversial referee decision during a football match between Peru and Argentina sparked a pitch invasion. Police used tear gas to control the crowd, causing panic and a deadly stampede as fans tried to escape. This incident resulted in the worst stadium disaster in football history.
2. Kanjuruhan Stadium Disaster – Malang, Indonesia (2022) Date: October 1, 2022
Fatalities: 135
Following a football match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya, fans invaded the pitch. Police employed tear gas to manage the situation, leading to a panic and stampede at the exits.
3. Hillsborough Disaster – Sheffield, England (1989) Date: April 15, 1989
Fatalities: 96
Overcrowding in the stands during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest caused a fatal crush.
4. Accra Sports Stadium Disaster – Accra, Ghana (2001) Date: May 9, 2001
Fatalities: 126
During a match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, police fired tear gas at rioting fans, resulting in a stampede.
5. Ellis Park Stadium Disaster – Johannesburg, South Africa (2001) Date: April 11, 2001
Fatalities: 43
A stampede occurred when too many fans were allowed into the stadium during a match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
6. Heysel Stadium Disaster – Brussels, Belgium (1985) Date: May 29, 1985
Fatalities: 39
Rioting fans caused a wall to collapse before the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus, leading to a fatal crush.
7. Kathmandu Stadium Disaster – Kathmandu, Nepal (1988) Date: March 12, 1988
Fatalities: 93
A sudden hailstorm during a football match led fans to rush towards locked exits, causing a deadly stampede.
8. Year Stadium Disaster – Yeoné, Cameroon (2022) Date: January 24, 2022
Fatalities: 8
Fans trying to enter the Olembe Stadium for an Africa Cup of Nations match caused a crush at the entrance gates.
9. The Tragedy of Gate 12 – Buenos Aires, Argentina (1968) Date: June 23, 1968
Fatalities: 71
After a match between River Plate and Boca Juniors, fans were crushed while attempting to exit through a closed gate.
10. RCB Victory Parade Stampede – Bengaluru, India (2025) Date: June 4, 2025
Fatalities: At least 11
Overcrowding outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory led to a fatal stampede.
