Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday said that China and India should consolidate the positive momentum in their bilateral relations and strengthen coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs.

Wang made the remarks in Manila during a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. He said both countries should keep humanity’s well-being in mind, demonstrate responsibility as major nations, and contribute to advancing multipolarity and greater democracy in international relations.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said China is ready to work with India to implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries.

He called for maintaining close high-level exchanges, enhancing cooperation in areas including economy and trade, media, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, while properly handling sensitive issues.

Wang also urged both sides to strengthen coordination and cooperation, promote the growth of the greater BRICS cooperation mechanism, and better represent and safeguard the common interests of developing countries.

China will continue to support India in hosting a successful BRICS summit this year, Wang said.

During the meeting, Jaishankar said India’s positions on issues related to Taiwan and Xizang have not changed, and that India respects China’s sovereignty. He added that India has consistently worked towards a positive and cooperative bilateral relationship with a forward-looking approach.
