The Congress Working Committee (CWC) held its meeting on Wednesday as the Opposition stepped up its attack on the Centre over examination reforms, student-related issues and the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple.
The meeting was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, former party president Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and senior leader P Chidambaram, among others.
Students At Centre Of CWC Meet
During the meeting, the CWC decided to organise the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme in around 800 cities across the country. Rahul Gandhi is expected to participate in programmes in several cities as part of the campaign.
After the meeting, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal said the government was totally on the back foot on these educational issues during the monsoon session of Parliament.
“Number one is the issue of examination in this country… The agitation that has been done by the students, and the way in which the Govt of India has dealt with that agitation, the Congress Working Committee unanimously opined that the sessions which were held in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were 100% successful for the opposition parties, and the government was totally on the back foot on these educational issues. Rahul Gandhi’s initiative on this educational issue by ‘Chhatraon Ki Goonj’ and his direct involvement in the agitation, especially the surgical strike on the Prime Minister’s house, itself created a very big atmosphere for solving the situation for the students of this country,” he said.
The party also focused on education and examination reforms. Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have asked the chief ministers of the four Congress-ruled states to submit a report within a month outlining the reforms required in their respective education and examination systems.
Ram Temple Donation Theft
The CWC also decided that the Congress would organise protests across the country over the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya as the party prepares for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.
“This applies nationwide, not just to Uttar Pradesh; we must address the revelations regarding the theft of donations meant for the Ram Mandir Trust… PM Modi must break his silence on this issue, and action must be taken, specifically, a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry. The Congress party will launch a nationwide campaign across various states against this theft of donations,”Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said.
US-China
The meeting also discussed developments related to China and the United States. The CWC expressed “deep concern” over the issue, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “clean chit” to China had contributed to serious challenges in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
“The CWC has expressed deep concern regarding repeated instances of surrender, whether concerning China or the US, by the Modi government and the Prime Minister himself,” Ramesh said.
Delimitation
On the issue of delimitation, the CWC said that the current strength of the Lok Sabha, which stands at 543 seats, should remain unchanged for the next 25 years. The party also called for women’s reservation to be implemented within the existing 543-seat strength of the Lok Sabha.
