The Centre has decided to demolish Krishi Bhawan and Shastri Bhawan in the heart of the national capital to make way for the construction of Common Central Secretariat Buildings 4 and 5, at a cost of over Rs 3,006 crore.

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) floated a tender on Monday in this regard, a copy of which was seen by CNN-News18.

The demolition will cover an area of 1.22 lakh square metres on Dr Rajendra Prasad Road to make space for the two new ultra-modern buildings.

According to the document, Krishi Bhawan, which has seven floors, and Wings A to G of Shastri Bhawan will be demolished. These buildings currently host several ministries, which are being shifted to the recently unveiled Common Secretariat Buildings 1, 2, and 3.

The new Buildings 4 and 5 will each have eight floors and will be constructed as PEB steel structures, including a basement, ground floor, seven upper storeys, and a terrace. The construction deadline is two years. The contract also includes operation and maintenance for five years after completion.

The recently inaugurated Buildings 1, 2, and 3 are called Kartavya Bhawans. Several key ministries, including Defence, Home, and Finance, are being relocated there from Raisina Hill, and the Prime Minister’s Office is also expected to move to the new Seva Teerth 1 block of the Executive Enclave. This will clear the way for the upcoming Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum at Raisina Hill.

Krishi Bhawan currently houses ministries such as Agriculture, Rural Development, and Panchayati Raj, while Shastri Bhawan hosts Information and Broadcasting, Education, Culture, and other departments.

The Cabinet Secretariat was shifted to Seva Teerth 2 in September.
