A 29-year-old man was arrested in Kerala’s Idukki district after he allegedly killed his parents at their home, police said on Saturday. The incident took place in Ezhukumvayal at around 9.30pm on Friday. Police identified the accused as Ajeesh and said his parents, Antony, 59, and Valsamma, 55, were found dead inside the house.

According to police, Ajeesh allegedly attacked the couple with a knife and stabbed them several times. He later recorded a video of his injured parents and sent it to a relative. The relative alerted the local parish priest and neighbours, who went to the house and found the couple dead.

Police said Ajeesh had a history of alcohol and drug use and had previously undergone a de-addiction programme. After returning from the centre, he often quarrelled with his parents, they said.

During questioning, Ajeesh allegedly told police that he had sent his parents to “heaven” after receiving a “call from God”. His grandmother was also at the house at the time of the incident, but police said she was not harmed.

The elderly woman is bedridden and has hearing and vision difficulties. She reportedly became aware of what had happened only after relatives arrived at the house, police said.

Police said Ajeesh appeared to be looking for his mother when he was taken back to the house on Saturday as part of the evidence collection process.

The Nedumkandam police have registered a murder case. Ajeesh was produced before a court on Saturday and was remanded in judicial custody.

The funeral of the deceased couple will be held after their son, who is currently abroad, returns, police said.
