Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman will not come to India to attend the BRICS Summit. Minister of State for External Affairs Humayun Kabir has confirmed this.
On Thursday, journalists asked questions about Rahman’s participation in the summit. Kabir said,
Our Prime Minister did not get the invitation. The Chairman of BIMSTEC has received the invitation.
He said that a government representative from Bangladesh can go to the summit, but there is no possibility of Prime Minister Tariq Rahman coming to India.
The BRICS summit will be held on September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Leaders of many countries will participate in it.
Not a member of BRICS, yet invited as BIMSTEC Chair
Bangladesh is not a member of BRICS. India had invited Tariq Rehman, as the current Chairman of BIMSTEC, to participate in the outreach session of the BRICS Summit.
BIMSTEC is a regional organization of 7 countries in South and South-East Asia. Its full name is Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation.
This includes India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand. The objective of the organization is to promote trade, connectivity, security and economic cooperation among the member countries.
Rahman’s India tour was postponed in August also
This is the second time that Tariq Rehman’s visit to India has been postponed. Earlier, he was to come to India on 22nd August, but this program was postponed even before the tour.
At that time Bangladesh had raised the issue of extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with India. There is already tension between the two countries regarding this issue.
Now Bangladesh’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir has said that the government is preparing for a separate bilateral visit of Tariq Rahman to India. This visit will take place at the right time for both the countries.
