Soot-choked “black rain” has fallen across multiple districts of Moscow after Ukraine launched its largest-ever drone assault against the Russian capital, scoring a direct hit on a vital energy facility. Close to 200 long-range strike drones targeted the metropolis early on Thursday, overwhelming local air defences and setting the strategic Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya ablaze. As thick columns of dark smoke billowed thousands of feet into the air, residents in the southeastern suburbs and surrounding towns, including Balashikha and Lyubertsy, reported a fine, oily drizzle that coated vehicles, streets, and clothing in a dark, toxic residue.
The multi-directional aerial barrage marks a significant escalation in Kyiv’s campaign against Russia’s domestic energy infrastructure. Social media platforms were quickly flooded with verified footage showing a fuel storage tank detonating at the Kapotnya facility, a blast so powerful it launched the massive metal lid of the structure high into the sky. The refinery, operated by Gazprom Neft, is a critical piece of infrastructure that supplies approximately 40 per cent of Moscow’s petrol and half of its diesel fuel. Its disruption immediately triggered traffic closures and forced temporary flight suspensions across the capital’s major airports.

While municipal authorities initially downplayed the severity of the precipitation, the city’s official channels later advised vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, and asthmatics—to minimise outdoor exposure or temporarily leave the affected southeastern sectors. Ground footage captured an oily sheen slicking local car parks, while residents expressed anxiety over the long-term health risks of breathing in the heavily polluted air.
Beyond the industrial zone, falling debris and stray drones caused secondary fires at a nearby shopping centre and punctured the upper floors of a high-rise residential block. Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed that at least 17 civilians, including two children, sustained injuries during the chaotic morning raid.
A Psychological Shift in the Capital
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the operation as an absolutely justified response to recent Russian strikes on Kyiv’s historic landmarks, warning that if Ukraine burns, Moscow will face the same fate. Analysts note that the psychological impact of the strike is profound; for the first time, millions of ordinary citizens witnessed the direct consequences of the war from their apartment windows. While Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov vowed a massive military retaliation, the sight of a darkened sky and black rain has brought the front lines directly to the Kremlin’s doorstep.
