Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on agreeing to a bilateral trade deal and said it was a “big day” for India-US relations.

India and the United States have agreed on a trade deal under which Washington will reduce the tariff on Indian goods from 25 per cent to 18 per cent, President Trump announced on Monday after a phone conversation with Prime Minister Modi.

PM Modi welcomed the decision and said he was delighted that “Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18 per cent.”

“A big day for India-US relations as the trade deal has been locked with a significantly reduced tariff of 18%, paving the way for stronger trade ties and mutual growth,” Shah said in a post on X.

“I congratulate PM @narendramodi and President @realDonaldTrump for this historic deal, which will elevate our strategic partnership and greatly benefit both nations and their people. Business between India and US set to flourish further,” the Union Home Minister added.

The phone call between the two leaders was the first interaction between them this year.

On Monday, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor announced the latest conversation on X. He later confirmed to CNN-News18 that tariffs on Indian imports had been reduced from 50 per cent to 18 per cent.

Amit Shah was among several senior ministers from the Modi government to congratulate the Prime Minister on the trade agreement.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also welcomed the development, saying it would give a major boost to economic ties between the two countries. “Welcome the announcements on bilateral trade following the conversation between PM @narendramodi and President @realDonaldTrump,” Jaishankar wrote on X. He added that the deal would “create more jobs, spur growth and promote innovation in both economies,” while strengthening India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and encouraging trusted technology partnerships. “A robust economic relationship is the strongest foundation for our strategic partnership,” he said.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also welcomed the agreement, describing it as a landmark moment in India-US relations. Congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, Goyal said the deal reflected “the power of two like-minded, fair-trading democracies working together for shared prosperity.” He added that the agreement would unlock major opportunities for farmers, MSMEs, entrepreneurs and skilled workers, and help India gain access to advanced US technology. “It is not just a trade deal – it is a historic turning point that will reshape India–US relations and accelerate our journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047,” Goyal said in a post on X.
