As Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his five-nation diplomatic tour with his last stop in Italy, much of the internet’s attention was drawn to a light-hearted moment involving a packet of Melody toffees gifted to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. But beyond the viral moment, the visit also highlighted India’s growing emphasis on cultural diplomacy through traditional craftsmanship and indigenous textiles in PM Modi’s gifts for Meloni.

Among the gifts presented to Meloni were two intricately designed silk stoles that carried deep cultural symbolism from India’s Northeast – a Muga Silk stole from Assam and a Shirui Lily-inspired silk stole from Manipur. Both gifts reflected India’s effort to showcase regional heritage and artisanal excellence on the global stage.

The Muga Silk stole represented one of India’s most prized textile traditions. Often referred to as Assam’s “Golden Silk,” Muga silk is renowned for its naturally rich golden hue and remarkable durability. Produced exclusively in the Brahmaputra Valley, the silk is created without artificial dyes, making it one of the country’s most sustainable and environmentally conscious textile traditions.

What makes Muga silk particularly distinctive is its longevity. Considered among the strongest natural fibres in the world, the fabric can last for generations while developing a deeper sheen over time. Its moisture-absorbing and UV-resistant qualities further add to its appeal, blending luxury with functionality. The choice of the stole also appeared carefully aligned with Italy’s longstanding reputation for premium fashion, luxury textiles and refined craftsmanship – creating a symbolic bridge between Assamese weaving traditions and Italian design culture.

The second gift, the Shirui Lily silk stole, drew inspiration from the rare Shirui Lily flower found only on the Shirui Kashong Peak in Manipur. Known for its pale pinkish-white bell-shaped petals, the flower holds immense cultural significance for the Tangkhul Naga community and is regarded as a symbol of purity, identity and pride.

The stole carried not just aesthetic value but also the spirit of indigenous folklore and Himalayan craftsmanship. Interestingly, the lily itself also carries strong cultural resonance in Italy, where it has historically symbolised grace, purity and artistic refinement, frequently appearing in Renaissance-era art and architecture. Through this shared symbolism, the gift subtly underscored a cultural connection between India and Italy rooted in heritage, art and tradition.

Prime Minister Modi also presented a specially curated gift to Italian President Sergio Mattarella – a Marble Inlay Work Box accompanied by musical compilations of legendary Indian classical musicians Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and MS Subbulakshmi. The marble box, crafted using the intricate Pacchikari or Pietra Dura technique associated with Agra, reflected a unique artistic connection between India and Italy, as the art form traces its origins to Florence before flourishing in Mughal India.

Made from polished white marble and adorned with semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, turquoise and coral, the box showcased extraordinary craftsmanship. Inside, the recordings of Bhimsen Joshi and MS Subbulakshmi – both Bharat Ratna awardees and towering figures of Indian classical music – added a deeply cultural dimension to the gift, celebrating the shared appreciation of India and Italy for heritage, music and timeless artistic excellence.
