An accident was averted at Mumbai airport on Tuesday night. Two planes of Air India and Air India Express came face to face on the same runway. This incident happened around 10 pm. The Air India aircraft aborted take-off on the instructions of the air traffic controller, thereby averting a possible accident.

Sources said that the Air India Express plane had not left the runway after landing, when the Delhi bound Air India plane was preparing to take off from the same runway. An Air India spokesperson said the take-off was aborted following instructions from the air traffic controller.

According to reports, the Air India Express flight coming from Siliguri was just clearing the runway, when the Air India flight going to Delhi was preparing for takeoff from the same runway.

Take-off run stopped on ATC instructions

Air India issued a statement saying that the crew of flight AI816 from Mumbai to Delhi immediately stopped the takeoff run after receiving instructions from Air Traffic Control and the aircraft was taken back to the bay (parking area).

According to the airline, the aircraft will be inspected as per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Alternative arrangements are being made to take the passengers to their destination.

Generally, take-off run means the aircraft running along the ground before gaining take-off speed.

Number of passengers not disclosed

At present, official information about how many passengers were on board both the planes has not been revealed. The reasons for the incident are being investigated. The airline said safety is the top priority and the aircraft will be brought back into operation only after all necessary checks are completed.

A similar incident happened in Ahmedabad last month

Earlier in June, a similar incident had happened at Ahmedabad airport, when two planes of Air India and IndiGo came face to face on the same taxiway (a part of the runway), although both the planes were stopped in time.

There was a distance of about 200 meters between the two planes. Later the Air India aircraft was towed to the correct parking bay. After this the Indigo plane reached the runway. Read the full news…
