A 21-year-old woman was allegedly abducted in Bengaluru after marrying against her family’s wishes, triggering a dramatic chase through the city’s streets on Wednesday night. The car allegedly carrying the woman rammed into more than 20 vehicles, leaving six people injured, police said.
The woman, identified as Pooja, was eventually rescued after local residents managed to stop the vehicle. Police have arrested three men in connection with the incident Rakesh, 21, Karan, 25, and Ayas, 18. The alleged driver, identified as Saddam, managed to escape and is being searched for.
Woman Taken After Marriage Against Family’s Wishes
According to investigators, Pooja and her husband Omprakash, both originally from Melwas village in Rajasthan, had married around nine months ago and subsequently moved to Bengaluru.
Police suspect that Pooja’s paternal aunt, who was allegedly opposed to the marriage, may have sent the men to Bengaluru to bring her back. Investigators are probing the alleged role of her relatives in the incident.
The alleged abduction took place in Agrahara Dasarahalli on Wednesday night. Police said the men allegedly assaulted Omprakash before forcing Pooja into a car and driving away.
High-Speed Chase Leaves 20 Vehicles Damaged
The situation escalated when residents noticed the woman being taken away and attempted to intervene. The car allegedly sped through Govindarajanagar and Vijayanagar, hitting vehicles along the way.
According to police, more than 20 vehicles were damaged, including a judge’s car. Six people were also injured during the chaotic chase.
The injured have been identified as Prithviraj, 12; Yashika, 9; Amul, 35; Mani, 64; Jayalakshmi, 57; and Santosh, 33.
Jayalakshmi suffered a serious head injury and is undergoing treatment in the ICU of a private hospital, police said.
Residents Followed Car For Nearly 7 Km
The alleged abduction prompted residents Deepak and Kiran to follow the vehicle. They reportedly chased it for nearly six to seven kilometres and sought help from other residents near Hoshahalli in Vijayanagar.
The residents eventually managed to block the car.
According to the couple, they became suspicious after hearing a woman screaming from inside the vehicle. They followed the car as it sped away and noticed that it had already collided with several vehicles.
The residents then joined forces and stopped the vehicle, allowing them to rescue Pooja and catch the three occupants.
Alleged Driver Flees, Three Arrested
Police said the alleged driver, Saddam, fled when residents confronted the occupants of the car. The three other men were caught by the residents and subsequently handed over to the police.
The police have registered cases relating to alleged kidnapping, assault and the road accidents caused during the chase.
Investigators are now questioning the arrested men and examining the alleged involvement of Pooja’s relatives. Police teams are also searching for Saddam, who remains absconding.
The investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction, the role of the accused and whether Pooja’s family members were involved in sending the men to Bengaluru.
