Srinagar is about to witness one of the most interesting political face-offs in recent years. The entire political drama revolves around two dates — November 2 and 3.

As per sources, National Conference’s influential MP from Srinagar, Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, is all set for a major political outreach from Srinagar on November 3. In a crucial meeting yesterday, Ruhullah told his core team and dedicated workers to remain ready and finish all final preparations. His supporters, especially the youth, are highly energised.

Ruhullah has emerged as the most vocal and popular face among the youth of Kashmir. His stand on the reservation issue, his unapologetic demand for restoration of rights, and his style of speaking truth even against his own party’s government has given him an image that goes far beyond National Conference. He is no longer just an NC MP, he is seen as a youth leader in his own right.

Exactly 24 hours before his programme, PDP has made a very calculated move. The party has announced that its Foundation Day, which is traditionally celebrated on July 28 every year, will now be celebrated on November 2 in Srinagar. The July 28 programme was postponed this year due to bad weather. But holding it now, on November 2, right before Ruhullah’s programme, is what political analysts are calling a masterstroke.

THE REASON

The reason is very interesting.

PDP does not want this to be seen as NC vs PDP. PDP wants to make this fight PDP vs Ruhullah. The party wants to push National Conference as an organisation to the back and project it as a direct contest between two individual popularities – PDP’s new face Iltia Mufti vs. Aga Ruhullah.

At A Glance

  • 1.

National Conference MP Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi is scheduled for a major political outreach program in Srinagar on November 3.

  • 2.

PDP announced it will celebrate its postponed Foundation Day in Srinagar on November 2, exactly 24 hours prior to Ruhullah’s event.

  • 3.

PDP aims to frame the political contest as a personality-centric battle between Iltija Mufti and Aga Ruhullah rather than a party rivalry.

  • Why?

Because National Conference as a cadre-based party is still very strong in Srinagar. But if the fight is made personality-centric — Ruhullah vs Iltija — PDP feels it has a better chance. Iltija Mufti has been very active for the last one year, she is articulate, fluent, active on social media, and has been raising youth-centric issues just like Ruhullah. There is also strong speculation that Iltija might contest from the Srinagar region in the upcoming elections.

So PDP’s plan for November 2 is simple: Gather maximum people, make the Foundation Day rally a huge success, show street strength in Srinagar, and create a narrative before Ruhullah hits the street on 3rd November.

Sources say that PDP leadership has given clear instructions to its workers, especially in South Kashmir and Srinagar urban areas, to mobilise maximum people and make the 2nd November rally successful at any cost. They want to do a show of strength, a “show stunt” as you rightly said, to prove that PDP is still the main force in Srinagar.

For the last few months, the narrative in Srinagar was that Aga Ruhullah is the undisputed leader of the youth. PDP wants to break that narrative. By holding a massive rally on November 2, they want to tell the youth and the media that there is an alternative young leader in Iltija Mufti too.

This is also about controlling the media cycle. Whatever party holds a rally on November 2 will dominate the news on November 3 morning. When Ruhullah starts his programme on 3rd November, the newspapers and social media will already be full of PDP’s rally pictures from 2nd November. It is a classic case of narrative setting.

    BATTLE LINES ARE DRAWN

So now, the battle lines are very clear.

On one side is PDP, celebrating its Foundation Day, trying to prove its relevance, trying to project Iltija Mufti, and trying to make the contest PDP vs Ruhullah.

On the other side is Sayed Agha Ruhullah Mehdia leader who has built his image on honesty and straight talk, who will try to prove on November 3 that his connect with the people is organic and goes beyond party flags.

The people of Srinagar will be watching both days closely. Will they turn up for PDP on November 2? Will they turn up in even larger numbers for Ruhullah on November 3?

One thing is certain, after November 3, the politics of Srinagar will change, and we will know who actually holds the pulse of the youth — PDP or Aga Ruhullah.

The PDP postponed its Foundation Day celebration from July 28 due to bad weather. The party rescheduled it to November 2 to create a narrative right before National Conference MP Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi’s major political outreach programme on November 3, aiming to frame the contest as a direct personality clash between Iltija Mufti and Ruhullah rather than an NC versus PDP battle.
