Apple will not launch the standard iPhone 18 at its annual event today, September 9. Only three premium devices, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the company’s first foldable iPhone, are expected to be introduced in this event.
The reason for this is the increasing cost of memory chips. Apart from this, new watches and AirPods will also be introduced in the wearables segment.
This will be the first keynote of John Ternes, who became the new CEO after Tim Cook stepped down on September 1. The event will start tonight at 10:30 pm Indian time, which can be watched live on Apple’s website.
The first foldable iPhone: can be as big as an iPad Mini when opened
- Display: It will have a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6 to 7.8-inch inner foldable screen, which when unfolded will feel like an iPad Mini. When unfolded, its thickness will be only 4.5mm. It can be provided with a 5000mAh or larger battery.
- Big change in security: Due to the foldable form-factor, Touch ID will be given in place of Face ID. Punch-hole front camera will be available on both the screens and dual camera setup will be available in the rear.
- Chipset and Color: A20 chipset will be available in it. The phone can come in 2 colors. Its estimated price can be 2 to 2.5 thousand dollars i.e. around ₹ 2.36 lakh.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: Small Dynamic Island and Variable Aperture
The design in the Pro lineup will remain the same as the iPhone 17 Pro with aluminum build and back glass, but there will be major changes in the features:
- Small Dynamic Island: The size of the punch-hole dynamic island on the screen has been much more compact than before. The camera will be available only of 48 megapixels.
- 2nm chip and C2 modem: For better speed and efficiency, the phone will have 2-nanometer chipset and new C2 modem. The thickness may increase slightly due to the larger battery.
- Aperture like DSLR camera: Variable aperture can be found in the main camera of iPhone 18 Pro Max or both Pro models. This will improve low-light and depth control.
- New Colors: Apart from silver and matte black, ‘light blue’ and ‘cherry’ colors can be available.
Apple Watch 12, Watch Ultra 4 and new AirPods will also come
Apart from iPhone, the company will also give a big upgrade to its wearables ecosystem in the event. New smartwatches and audio devices to be introduced from the stage:
- Apple Watch Series 12: The Watch 12 will come with the new and more power-efficient S-series processor in the regular lineup. It is expected to get better sleep tracking, predictive health alerts and a brighter display than before. It will work on the new watchOS 27 out-of-the-box.
- Apple Watch Ultra 4: This time in the Ultra series designed for extreme sports and outdoor users, a bigger battery can be found with a stronger titanium chassis. In this, satellite connectivity and deep-diving features have been made more accurate.
- Next Generation AirPods: The new AirPods lineup will feature a new H-series chip to improve active noise cancellation (ANC) and in-ear audio experience. Also, better support for Siri AI and ‘Find My’ network will be seen in the charging case.
Memory chip becomes expensive, if the price is increased then the phone will not sell
The company can somehow bear this cost pressure in the Pro model, because Pro customers are ready to pay higher prices.
But the increase in cost in the base model would have a direct impact either on the company’s profits or on the customers. For this reason, Apple has postponed the launch of the base model.
Memory accounted for 10% of total component spending for 256GB Pro models in 2025. It will increase to 34% in 2026. It is expected to cross 40% by 2027.
18 month gap between two standard iPhones
Apple introduces a new base iPhone every year in September, but this time the iPhone 18 will have to wait until early 2027. In such a situation, there will be a difference of about one and a half year between the two base models. This will be the longest wait ever in Apple’s history.
Which products will be left out of the September 9 event?
Apple wants to keep the focus of the event only on foldable phones and Pro models, so that attention does not get distracted. Therefore, many devices can be put on hold for subsequent months:

These models will be discontinued after the launch of iPhone 18 Pro and Max
Every year, after the launch of a new iPhone, Apple discontinues some old models, especially the Pro models. So that people buy new models.
