Star Indian shuttler Anmol Kharb, who is coming off a quarterfinal finish at the Malaysia Super 100 earlier this month, stunned Arctic Open semifinalist and world no. 12 Line Christophersen in a three-game thriller at the Hylo Open on Thursday, sealing a spot for herself in the quarterfinals.
Anmol, who edged past Sri Lanka’s Ranithma Liyanage 21-19, 20-22 in a thrilling first-round encounter on Wednesday, produced another hard-fought performance to defeat Christophersen 11-21, 21-18, 25-23.
Anmol entered the clash as the underdog, having lost to the Danish shuttler in the Round of 16 at last year’s US Open in their first-ever meeting on the tour.
Anmol needed just a year to avenge that loss, stunning Christophersen and dashing the Dane’s hopes of claiming her maiden Hylo Open title.
Anmol will take on sixth seed and compatriot Unnati Hooda in the quarter-finals, after the latter cruised to a straight-games victory over Denmark’s Frederikke Ostergaard.
Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu cruised into the women’s singles quarter-finals with a dominant straight-games victory over France’s Rosy Pancasari, while compatriots Malvika Bansod and Isharani Baruah exited the tournament in Saarbrücken on Thursday.
Later in the day, India’s top-ranked men’s singles shuttler Lakshya Sen booked his place in the quarter-finals as well, beating compatriot Kiran George 21-15, 18-21, 21-12 in their Round of 16 clash.
The match lasted 54 minutes.
Sindhu needed just 26 minutes to dispatch France’s Rosy Oktavia Pancasari 21-9, 21-6 in their women’s singles second-round encounter.
Fresh from her runner-up finish at the French Open, former world champion Sindhu controlled the match, winning 42 of the 57 points played and limiting her opponent to just 15.
Sindhu, who opened her campaign with a victory over Prakriti Bharath, will take on Amalie Schulz in the quarter-finals.
Malvika, meanwhile, went down to Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang 11-21, 17-21 in 31 minutes.
The Indian struggled to keep pace with Zhang in the opening game and, despite an improved second, couldn’t force a decider.
