Bank employees are on strike for 3 days from today for 2 days leave in a week. That means, government and some private banks across the country will remain closed till Wednesday. During this period, work related to check clearance, cash deposit and withdrawal, FD renewal and government treasury will not be done.
Now bank branches will open directly on Thursday, October 1. Banks have told their customers that branch level services will be affected due to the strike. However, digital services like UPI, mobile banking and ATM will remain operational during this period.

Banks opened on Sunday after 10 years of demonetization
Due to the bank strike, banks opened for the general public on Sunday after 10 years on the instructions of the Finance Ministry. Earlier, after demonetization in 2016, banks were open on Sunday, 14th November.
Then people were standing in queues in banks to exchange old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, deposit and withdraw cash. To handle the crowd, the government had decided to open banks on Sunday also.
No charge for withdrawing cash from ATM
During the bank strike, there will be no charge for withdrawing cash from ATMs of all government banks including SBI and PNB even after the monthly free limit is exhausted.
According to RBI rules, now you can withdraw cash from your bank’s ATM 5 times every month for free. There is a limit of 3 times a month in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai and 5 times in smaller cities for free transactions from ATMs of other banks.
If you withdraw cash from ATM more than the limit in a month, a charge of ₹ 23 + GST is deducted every time. Apart from this, when you use ATM, banks also charge each other a fee – Rs 19 for withdrawing cash and Rs 7 for checking balance.

Union adamant on strike, 90% employees will join
The unions have rejected the appeal of the Financial Services Department, Indian Banks Association and bank management to postpone the strike.
7 big bank unions of the country will participate in the strike, to which more than 90% of the bank employees are associated. These include AIBEA, AIBOC, NCBE, AIBOA, BEFI, INBEF and INBOC.
The unions say that their protests will continue until the government sets a firm date for implementing 5-day working a week.

Government’s refusal on 5-day working in banks
Media reports just before the bank employees’ strike claimed that the government had never promised 5-day working for banks and this issue was not discussed even during salary revision talks.
A Finance Ministry source said that this demand was raised unilaterally by the employee unions and no consensus was reached between the two parties.
Government and unions also face to face regarding PLI scheme
Apart from working 5 days a week, there is also a controversy regarding the rules of bonus (PLI). The government has implemented a new rule of bonus for senior officers like officers of scale-4 and above.
Under this, officers doing good work can get incentive or bonus equal to 365 days’ basic salary. Bank unions are also opposing this.
