Balochistan witnessed protests, flag-burning demonstrations and a series of attacks on Pakistani security forces around Pakistan’s Independence Day, with separatist groups and local protesters marking August 14 as a “Black Day”, CNN-News18 has learnt.

Demonstrations were reported from several parts of the province, where Pakistani flags were burned as protesters opposed Islamabad’s rule. The unrest coincided with multiple firing incidents, attacks on security personnel and installations, and the torching of commercial vehicles along a key highway.

Amid heightened security concerns, mobile phone services were suspended in several districts of the province.

Independence Day Ceremony Disrupted By Local Residents

In one incident, local Baloch residents disrupted an attempt by the administration to hold a Pakistan Independence Day ceremony and forced officials to leave the area.

The incident came amid wider protests across the province against August 14 celebrations, with sections of the Baloch population observing the day as a “Black Day”.

BLA Claims Attacks On Pakistani Security Forces

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and other Baloch separatist elements also launched multiple attacks targeting Pakistani security forces, leaving at least five people dead and several others injured across separate incidents.

The BLA claimed an attack on Pakistani military checkposts at Spin Karez near Quetta. In a video released by the group, it claimed that weapons and military uniforms were seized during the attack.

CNN-News18 cannot independently verify the claims made by the separatist group.

Commercial Vehicles Torched On N-40 Highway

In another incident, three commercial vehicles were set ablaze on the N-40 Quetta-Taftan Highway between the Taftan and Nokundi areas of Balochistan.

Armed men torched a trailer, a 10-wheeler truck and an oil tanker, sources said.

According to local traders, Baloch separatists were behind the attack. Traders also claimed that the drivers and helpers of the vehicles were taken hostage before the vehicles were set on fire, sources said.

The incident further highlighted the deteriorating security situation in parts of the province, with Pakistani security forces struggling to establish law and order amid repeated attacks and disruptions.

Three Killed In Ziarat Firing

In Ziarat, armed men opened fire on people travelling on motorcycles, killing three young men and injuring two others.

The victims were reported to be residents of Sanjavi. Their bodies were later shifted to their native village.

The attack was among several violent incidents reported from different parts of Balochistan around Independence Day.

Police Station Attacked In Qila Abdullah

In another incident, armed men attacked the Toot Ada police station in Qila Abdullah.

Two policemen were injured in the attack, adding to the series of assaults targeting Pakistani security personnel across the province.

Home Minister’s Convoy Targeted In Mastung

A convoy of Balochistan’s home minister was also targeted by gunmen in Mastung on August 14.

Two people were killed in the attack, while three security guards were injured.

The violence and demonstrations underlined the tense security situation in the province on Pakistan’s Independence Day, as separatist groups stepped up attacks and protesters in several areas publicly rejected the celebrations.
