A Russian drone on Sunday struck an evacuated passenger train near the Polish-Ukrainian border crossing, used shortly before by politicians including former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, as Moscow stepped up its attacks with the biggest drone barrage in months.

The train was evacuated after Ukraine learnt of the incoming strike, before the drone hit the engine carriage, according to The Financial Times. It struck 2 km from the Polish border, near the Yahodyn crossing point, although it did not cause any casualties.

Bildt was among a group of foreign dignitaries returning from a summit in Kyiv, who had crossed just before on another train and exited across the border in Dorohusk. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of “escalating” the conflict.

Ukraine Alleges ‘Deliberate’ Attack

The attack prompted Poland to scramble aircraft, as drones also hit a petrol station near the border and activated warning alarms for locals in parts of eastern parts of the country. The country’s armed forces said its moves were “preventive in nature” and “aimed at securing and protecting airspace.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow struck the train “deliberately” and accused Russia of attacking rail and energy infrastructure as well as civilian buildings across the country, including in the west.

Ukraine’s foreign minister Andriy Sybiha said the attack represented “Putin’s terror ‘knocking’ directly on the doors of the EU and NATO” and called for more sanctions targeting the “aggressive regime.”
