Apple will host its developer conference today,i.e June 8, introducing the next iteration of its software platforms, including iOS 27. Following this, the official countdown to the next-generation iPhones will begin. But if rumours are anything to go by, this year we may not see the standard iPhone make its debut alongside the flagship lineup. According to reports, Apple may reserve the standard iPhone 18 for a later launch, focusing instead on three premium models, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
The regular iPhone 18, alongside the iPhone 18e and a second-generation Air model, could arrive only in early 2027 ending Apple’s traditional all-at-once autumn launch streak.
iPhone Fold to get the main attention
But why? Well, according to reports, this year Apple wants to keep the focus on Pro models and the first ever foldable. The foldable iPhone, in particular, is expected to be the headline act. Recent dummy unit leaks suggest the device could adopt a passport-style design similar to the original Google Pixel Fold, featuring a wide-format inner display and a compact outer screen.
Reports also indicate it may sport a 7.8-inch foldable OLED display on the inside and a 5.5-inch cover screen, making it Apple’s largest iPhone display yet. The foldable model is also tipped to be exceptionally thin, measuring around 4.7mm when unfolded, and could be priced above $2,000, placing it firmly in the ultra-premium category.
What to expect from the iPhone 18 Pro series
Alongside the foldable, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to bring a series of refinements rather than a complete redesign.
Current rumours point to upgrades focused on display quality, cameras, performance and battery life. One of the most visible changes could be new colour options. Leaks suggest Apple is testing shades such as Dark Cherry, Cloud Blue and Black for the Pro lineup, with Dark Cherry emerging as the standout addition. Display sizes are expected to remain unchanged at 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, but Apple is reportedly moving to newer LTPO+ OLED panels that could offer better brightness, improved image quality and greater power efficiency.
Another heavily rumoured upgrade is a smaller Dynamic Island. Multiple leaks suggest the cut-out could be around 35 per cent narrower than on current Pro models. While some reports claim Apple may introduce under-display Face ID technology, others suggest that change could still be a few years away.
The camera system is expected to receive significant improvements. Apple is reportedly testing a variable-aperture main camera, allowing it to adjust the amount of light entering the sensor. This could improve low-light photography, portraits and video recording. The company is also tipped to introduce a new three-layer stacked image sensor for better dynamic range, reduced noise and faster image processing. The telephoto camera may gain a wider aperture, while the front-facing camera could jump to 24 megapixels.
Under the hood, both Pro models are expected to run on Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip, reportedly built on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process. The chipset is rumoured to deliver up to 15 per cent faster performance and around 30 per cent better power efficiency. Apple may also increase RAM to 12GB and adopt improved memory packaging for smoother multitasking.
Battery life is another area Apple is said to be targeting. The iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a battery between 5,100mAh and 5,200mAh, making it one of the largest batteries ever used in a Pro iPhone. Additional upgrades could include Apple’s next-generation C2 modem and expanded satellite connectivity features.
What about the iPhone 18?
While most attention is currently focused on the iPhone 18 Pro models and Apple’s first foldable iPhone, rumours suggest the standard iPhone 18 could keep the overall design largely unchanged. The regular iPhone 18 is expected to retain a familiar look and a 6.3-inch display. The company is said to be working on a brighter OLED panel with improved power efficiency, while some leaks suggest that the smaller Dynamic Island rumoured for the Pro models could eventually make its way to the standard variant as well.
Under the hood, the iPhone 18 is expected to receive Apple’s next-generation A20 chip built on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process, bringing notable gains in performance and battery efficiency. Rumours also point to a RAM upgrade to 12GB, potentially narrowing the gap between the standard and Pro models.
Other expected upgrades include a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, Apple’s next-generation C2 modem for improved connectivity and improved battery life. While major camera redesigns are not currently expected, Apple appears to be focusing on refining performance, display quality and everyday usability rather than introducing dramatic hardware changes.
