An Indian national who was critically injured in the October 10 attack on Riyadh airport in Saudi Arabia has died while undergoing treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU), the Indian Embassy in Riyadh confirmed on Wednesday.
In a post on X, the embassy announced the death and said it had been extending support to the victim’s family throughout the ordeal. It also assured the family of all possible assistance in bringing the deceased’s mortal remains back to India or arranging a funeral in Riyadh, depending on their wishes.
“With a heavy heart, we share that another Indian national, critically injured in the 10 October attack on Riyadh airport, has passed away in ICU,” the embassy said.
“We have been by his family’s side throughout, and we remain with them now. We convey heartfelt condolences to the family and friends,” it added.
The embassy further said it would extend all possible assistance to facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains to India or the funeral in Riyadh, as per the family’s wishes.
The latest death comes weeks after the attack on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital, which resulted in multiple casualties, including one Indian earlier, and left hundreds injured.
The incident was among the deadliest attacks in a Gulf Arab country since the beginning of the Iran war.
What Happened In The October 10 Riyadh Airport Attack?
According to an Associated Press (AP) report, a missile struck a complex at King Khalid International Airport housing Terminals 3 and 4, which handle domestic flights.
Saudi civil aviation authorities said the deceased included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis, a Palestinian, a US citizen, an Egyptian, a Jordanian, a Syrian and a Sudanese national.
The injured were being treated at several hospitals across the country, according to the Saudi authorities cited in the AP report.
The Indian national’s death adds to the toll from the attack, although the embassy’s latest statement did not disclose his identity or provide further details about his injuries and treatment.
Saudi-Led Coalition Blames Iran-Backed Houthis
The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthi rebels in Yemen blamed the group for the Riyadh airport attack, describing it as a “fully-fledged war crime” and promising a firm response.
The incident came amid an escalation in hostilities between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis, with the latter also accused of carrying out attacks targeting Saudi airports, military installations and oil infrastructure.
The conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis dates back to 2015, when Riyadh intervened in Yemen’s civil war in support of the internationally recognised government. A period of relative calm following a 2022 ceasefire had given way to renewed hostilities.
