Social activist Anna Hazare has been admitted to the ICU at Bombay Hospital in Mumbai after his condition worsened during treatment at a hospital near his native village, Ralegan Siddhi, in Maharashtra.
Hazare was moved to Mumbai after developing a severe viral infection accompanied by acute dehydration, news agency IANS reported. He is currently under the care of Dr Gautam Bhansali at Bombay Hospital.
Anna Hazare’s Health Deteriorates
The octogenarian is being closely monitored by doctors in the ICU. His medical team is carrying out a detailed evaluation to assess his condition.
The veteran activist was transported to the hospital in a cardiac ambulance, accompanied by his caretakers from Ralegan Siddhi. Dr Bhansali said medical tests were being conducted and the next course of treatment would be decided based on the findings.
Hazare gained nationwide prominence during the India Against Corruption movement in 2011, although he had already established himself in Maharashtra through decades of social work and campaigns against corruption. Further details about Hazare’s health are awaited as he remains under observation.
The activist had recently backed the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest at Jantar Mantar over the alleged NEET paper leak. He also criticised the alleged use of force by police against protesters during their march towards Parliament on July 20. He subsequently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling on the government to open a dialogue with the protesting students and address their grievances.
In his letter, Hazare described reports of clashes and police action as “painful”, stressing that violence, destruction of public property and excessive use of force were incompatible with democratic principles. He further said issues raised by students, including alleged examination paper leaks, delays in recruitment, unemployment and other concerns, should not be treated solely as law-and-order matters. According to Hazare, they reflect broader social challenges and the expectations of the country’s younger population.
