The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved 5,099 new institutions during the 2024-25 academic year, adding 7,49,872 seats across various programmes, according to its Annual Report 2024-25. Most of the newly sanctioned capacity was concentrated in Computer Applications and Management, while Engineering and Technology accounted for a comparatively small proportion.
Computer Applications topped the list, with 3,959 newly approved institutions and a combined intake of 3,65,848 students. Management ranked second, with 3,500 institutions receiving approval and a total sanctioned intake of 3,47,644 seats, reported Indian Express.
Together, the two disciplines contributed more than 7.1 lakh seats, representing the overwhelming majority of the 7.5 lakh seats approved across new institutions in 2024-25.
Engineering and Technology, by comparison, saw approvals for 107 institutions with a combined intake of 34,045 seats. This was less than 10 per cent of the capacity approved in either Computer Applications or Management.
AICTE also approved new institutions in several smaller programme categories. Design received approvals for 17 institutions with a total intake of 1,385 seats, while Hotel Management and Catering had eight institutions with 790 seats. Applied Arts and Crafts and Planning recorded approvals for one and three institutions, with sanctioned intakes of 60 and 100 seats, respectively.
Furthermore, of the 7,49,872 seats approved during the year, 7,05,408—or roughly 94 per cent—were at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate programmes accounted for 29,974 seats, while diploma courses made up the remaining 14,490 seats.
In 2023-24, AICTE approved 90 new institutions under Engineering and Technology, with a combined intake of 41,512 seats spanning diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This included 51 institutions with diploma approvals, 42 with undergraduate approvals and four with postgraduate approvals.
Management recorded 105 unique new institutions in 2023-24, with 13,020 approved seats, all at the postgraduate level. MCA, meanwhile, had 53 unique institutions and an approved intake of 4,890 seats. The 2023-24 report did not list Computer Applications as a separate category, unlike the 2024-25 data.
Other programmes also saw smaller additions in 2023-24. Six new design institutions were approved with 300 seats, while Applied Arts and Crafts recorded four institutions and 440 seats. Planning had two new institutions with 58 seats, and Hotel Management and Catering had one institution with an approved intake of 120 seats.
