The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to host the inaugural India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM) 2026, scheduled to take place from January 21 to 23 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This three-day event, organised by the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) under the aegis of the ECI, is being hailed as the largest global gathering of its kind in the field of electoral governance.
The conference carries significant weight as it coincides with India assuming the Chairship of the Council of Member States of International IDEA for the year 2026. Under the overarching theme of “Democracy for an inclusive, peaceful, resilient and sustainable world”, the summit aims to provide a robust platform for international cooperation. Nearly 100 delegates representing Election Management Bodies (EMBs) from across the world, alongside representatives from foreign missions and international organisations, are expected to attend.
A central focus of the deliberations will be the “reimagining” of democratic processes in the face of modern challenges. Key thematic sessions are slated to address the integration of artificial intelligence in elections, the preservation of the purity of electoral rolls, and the mitigation of misinformation. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek Joshi, will lead over 40 bilateral meetings with international counterparts to foster a shared understanding of contemporary electoral obstacles and co-create innovative solutions.
The event also serves as a showcase for India’s own electoral framework. Participants will be familiarised with the technological innovations and rigorous processes that have established Indian elections as a global exemplar. Beyond official delegates, the conference will see high-level academic participation from four IITs, six IIMs, and twelve National Law Universities, ensuring that the discussions are grounded in both practical experience and scholarly research.
To mark the occasion, the ECI recently unveiled the official IICDEM 2026 logo, which features stylised human forms resembling protective hands. This imagery is intended to symbolise the role of citizens as the foundation of democracy and the collective responsibility to safeguard democratic values.
