Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis recently said something that is as exciting as it is scary. He said that Artificial Intelligence i.e. AGI, which has human-like thinking, is now just a few years away. “Maybe 2030, one or two years more or less,” he said at an event at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Even they themselves are surprised to hear this.

Hassabis compared AGI to a ‘singularity’, that is, the moment from which it will not be possible to look back. According to him, this will be the beginning of ‘a new human era’. And that is why they say again and again that preparations to face the new era should be made from now because there is less time left. Hassabis is not the only one who is saying such things.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that millions of jobs could be lost due to AI. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has even gone so far as to say that half of entry-level white-collar jobs could disappear in the next five years. Yes, it is also true that in recent times all these stalwarts have softened their ‘language of doom’ a bit, but the main message remains the same. Hassabis also acknowledged that some of his colleagues become ‘too certain’ in their predictions. This is not right. He did not just describe AGI as a synonym for danger. According to him, this technology can bring revolution in medical science. This could lead to economic transformation and lay the foundation for a world where the meaning of the word ‘scarcity’ changes, what futurists call a ‘post-scarcity world’.

His direct message to the youth and students is – whether you are studying ‘Humanities’ or are taking science-technology training, do not run away from this technology, embrace it. The most interesting thing he said was, ‘The future has not been written yet, but the next few years will decide what it will actually look like.’

AGI- When machines will be expert in every task like humans

AGI means Artificial General Intelligence. This is the level of AI when machines can do every task with the same or even better capability than humans. Presently AI is expert in one task, AGI will be expert in every task. Hassabis estimates this could become a reality by 2030. Sam Altman and Dario Amodei have also hinted around this time frame. Potential benefits of AGI – cure of diseases, economic transformation, poverty-free world. But there are also fears associated with it like the danger of job loss, the question of control, unexpected impact on society. The world probably doesn’t even have five years to prepare.
