Former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi have sent back the security personnel deployed at their Patna residence after the Bihar government withdrew their Z-plus security cover following a review of protection provided to VIPs in the state.
The senior Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders were subsequently assigned security personnel from the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP). However, the new security staff stationed outside their 10 Circular Road residence was asked to leave.
Under the revised arrangement, the two leaders were to be provided with two to eight house guards from the BSAP, two bodyguards from the Patna District Force, along with a pilot vehicle and a bulletproof car.
Tejashwi Also Returns Security Cover
The move was followed by Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav, who also returned his Y-category security cover.
The Y-category security cover of Tej Pratap Yadav, chief of the Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD) and elder son of Lalu Prasad Yadav, has also been withdrawn.
RJD spokesperson Shakti Yadav said more party leaders could return their security cover in the coming days.
The development comes days after the Bihar government asked Rabri Devi to vacate the government bungalow at 10 Circular Road in Patna.
Rabri Devi, who served as Bihar’s chief minister between 1997 and 2005, has been directed to vacate the residence as part of the state’s reallocation of official accommodation.
Reacting to the move, RJD leader Shakti Singh Yadav accused the government of targeting opposition leaders.
“Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, both have been former Chief Ministers. First, they were cheated regarding their house, then threatened to vacate it. The security of the entire family has been reduced. This is a conspiracy…they want to crush the opposition. There is no place for such politics in democracy…this is not acceptable to the people of Bihar…” he said.

Row Over Official Residence
The Bihar government had earlier directed Rabri Devi to vacate the official bungalow at 10 Circular Road after allotting it to Bihar Minister for Animal and Fisheries Resources Nand Kishore Ram.
According to the government, Rabri Devi had already been allotted an alternative accommodation on Hardinge Road in her capacity as Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council but had not shifted there.
The state government has reportedly given the family 15 days to vacate the residence.
Government Defends Decision
Defending the government’s stand, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary recently said official residences are public property and cannot be retained after a person’s tenure ends.
“The Chief Minister’s residence belongs to the people. It cannot be treated as anyone’s personal fiefdom or ancestral property,” Chaudhary said during a public event in Sheikhpura.
He also said he had vacated government accommodation within 24 hours of leaving office.
Rohini Acharya Urges RJD Workers To Rally Behind Rabri Devi
RJD leader Rohini Acharya has appealed to party workers and supporters to gather at former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi’s residence in Patna, amid the ongoing controversy over the withdrawal of the family’s security cover and the government’s directive to vacate the 10 Circular Road bungalow.
In a post on X, Rohini urged Lalu Prasad Yadav’s supporters to stand by the family and accused the Bihar government of acting out of political revenge.
“My appeal to all Lalu loyalists is that you all reach Rabri Devi ji’s official residence in large numbers and give this direct, clear, and firm message to the Chief Minister, who is acting out of a spirit of revenge: that you all are the true security and shield of the Lalu family”
She further alleged that the family was being targeted and said the people of Bihar were closely watching the developments.
“The entire country, the entire Bihar is watching how Bihar’s first woman Chief Minister and her family are being harassed, and the people of Bihar alone will give a befitting reply to every action taken out of a spirit of revenge.”
