US President Donald Trump on Monday said countries around the world should “reimburse” the United States for its role in securing the Strait of Hormuz, as the key waterway remains at the centre of the conflict in West Asia.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said “oil is flowing through the Hormuz Strait” and claimed other countries had provided “no help” to the US.
“The Countries of the World, which have been no help to us whatsoever, should, and will, reimburse the United States of America when this SCAM Confligration is all over,” Trump wrote.
He added, “We are doing it much more for others, than we are for ourselves,” arguing that the US has been carrying a greater burden for other countries “for Generations”.
Hormuz a major flashpoint
Trump’s comments come as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains at its lowest point, with the waterway becoming a major flashpoint in the war in West Asia.
The disruption has added pressure to global energy markets, with oil prices rising above $100 a barrel this week. US gas prices have also climbed, while diesel prices reached a record high this month.
The strait has faced an Iranian blockade, followed by US military action, since February 28, when the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran. Before the war, the waterway was open to regular shipping.
Iran now requires vessels to seek permission to pass and is considering a system to charge service fees. Ships that do not comply have faced Iranian attacks, while the US has carried out periodic strikes along the Iranian coast.
Trump blames Biden for price rise
In a follow-up post, Trump pushed back against criticism over rising prices and blamed former US President Joe Biden’s administration for the increases.
“I hope everyone realizes that price increases throughout America were caused by Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration, not by ‘TRUMP,’” he wrote. Trump also claimed oil prices had been higher under Biden and said his administration had prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“With the temporary exception of Oil, prices are coming down sharply,” Trump said, adding that oil prices would “drop like a rock” once the war with Iran ends, which he said “will not be long”.
