Cristiano Ronaldo has left Saudi Arabia for Madrid, only days after his camp slammed news reports about the same as ‘fake’. Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr’s manager Jorge Jesus on Friday (March 6) said the superstar has suffered an injury that was ‘more serious than expected’, which would require treatment only possible in the Spanish capital with his ‘personal therapist’.

“After the tests, we saw that the injury Cristiano Ronaldo sustained was more serious than expected. Cristiano will now travel to Spain, as other players have done previously while recovering from injuries. His injury requires treatment in Madrid with his personal therapist, and we hope he will return quickly and help the team,” Jesus said, as quoted by journalist Farbrizio Romano.

Ronaldo played 81 minutes in Al-Nassr’s last match against Al-Fayha before being subbed out. In the post-match press conference, Jesus played down any injury concerns, saying that it was only ‘muscle fatigue’.

Two days later, as the conflict between the USA, Israel and Iran raged on, affecting several West Asian countries, including Saudi Arabia, reports in English media tracked that the footballer’s luxurious private jet had left Saudi Arabia for Madrid late in the night.

Reports conjectured that it was due to the conflict, but Ronaldo’s camp told several journalists that the reports were ‘wide of the mark’ and that he was being treated at the Al-Nassr training ground to recover from a ‘hamstring injury’.

While the timeline of the incidents could be as explained by Ronaldo’s camp and Al-Nassr, it’s also true that for the Saudi Arabian government, which runs the football league, the news about its biggest superstar rushing to safety from a war-like situation is a PR disaster. That is, even as the authorities have suspended several high-profile football matches for the same reason.

Ronaldo is now certain to miss the club’s next few matches, starting against Neom on Sunday. It needs to be seen if and when he returns.
