India has approved the export of up to 654 MW of electricity to Nepal for 18 hours a day from September 13 to December 31, 2026, the Ministry of Power said.

The approval permits the supply of up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV line and another 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV line.

Nepal had sought advance approvals for power imports from September to address generation deficits caused by recent flash floods.

The approval comes as India faces unusually high domestic power demand amid sultry weather, irrigation requirements during a relatively dry monsoon, and lower wind and hydroelectricity generation amid the El Niño effect.

While solar generation during daylight hours has been sufficient to meet overall demand, power requirements during non-solar hours have put pressure on coal- and gas-based plants. India’s peak power demand has remained above 260 GW, unusually high for September. On September 10, peak demand stood at 269 GW, while demand during non-solar hours reached 236 GW, with a shortage of 6.1 GW.

Nepal’s request for increased power flows has been processed under established frameworks, including trading through the day-ahead and real-time market segments of Indian power exchanges.
