Asian Games-bound Indian long distance runner Abhishek Pal has reportedly been issued a notice by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) over an apparent doping violation.
Pal has not been provisionally suspended by NADA at this stage, it is learnt.
The 72-member Indian athletics squad for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan includes Pal, who is scheduled to compete in the 5000m and 10,000m events.
“A banned substance has been found in a very small amount in his dope sample and he has been served a notice by the NADA,” a source privy to the development told news agency PTI on conditions of anonymity.
According to sources, the substance detected could be a female fertility drug.
“The banned substance is also something surprising. I am sure he will request the NADA for an investigation,” the source added.
The development could make it difficult for Pal to compete at the Asian Games, although he is expected to approach NADA seeking an early resolution of the matter.
Pal, who has also trained in the USA, produced a strong showing at the National Inter-State Championships in June, winning gold in the 10,000m and silver in the 5000m.
He had earlier claimed bronze in the 10,000m at the 2023 Asian Championships.
